Legend/Folk Lores Behind Gangaur

According to the folklores/legend, once Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Narad Muni planned a small trip to the nearby beautiful place. While they were about to visit forest, their arrival news spread like a wildfire. All women in the nearby villages started preparin delicious dishes for the divine guest. Not only upper class but even the lower class women were enthusiastic to meet Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. In order not to miss the opportunity of serving their Dieties, women of lower class first embarked on their journey to meet with all the offering from beautiful flowers, scented aromas to delicious food items. Happy with their offering and devotion, Goddess Parvati blessed the ladies by sprinkling holy “Suhagras” on them.

Later women from the higher class came with their offerings and savoury food. As they finished their offering to the God and Goddess, Lord Shiva questioned Parvati how she is going to bless the remaining suhagans as there were no suhagras left to bless them with. Finding a way out of this, Maata Gauri planned to bless the upper-class women with her own blood. The legend depicts that Goddess Parvati scratched the tip of her finger and blessed all the women’s love with her own blood.

And thus, all women till this day follow the tradition of offering and worshipping Lord Shiva and Mata Gauri to receive their blessings for their happy and successful marital life.
