meaning of new moon
Amavasya is the new moon day in the Hindu calendar. This is an important day as many rituals are performed only on Amavasya Tithi. The Amavasya falling on Monday is known as Somvati Amavasya and the Amavasya falling on Saturday is known as Shanichari Amavasya.
All Amavasya days are suitable for performing Shraddha rituals to please the ancestors. Amavasya day is also a suitable day to perform Kalsarp Dosh puja. Amavasya is also written and pronounced as Amavasya or Amavasya.
In Sanskrit, “Ama” means “together” and “Vasya” means “to reside”. Its second meaning can also be derived from “na” + “ma” + “asya” where “na” = “no”, “ma” = moon, “asya” = “there”, i.e. there is no moon. Or the moon is not visible.

What should not be done on Amavasya day?
According to the Hindu calendar, each date and event is associated with food of religious significance. In the same way, you can also find mention of Amavasya, Purnima, Dwadashi, Ekadashi and Trayodashi in Hindu scriptures, which are all different phases of the moon. Amavasya, is a day dedicated to our ‘Pitra’ and has its own rules and regulations. Here are some things that you should avoid buying during Amavasya to prevent any inauspicious events.
Amavasya is considered a day which is dedicated to ‘Pitra’. People especially worship ‘Shani Dev’ on this day. According to the scriptures, the broom is considered to be related to Goddess Lakshmi. It is said that buying a broom on Amavasya day angers Goddess Lakshmi, which further stops the incoming money. It fills the house with negative energy and may increase expenses in terms of health. To maintain proper flow of money in your home and impress Goddess Lakshmi, it is better to avoid buying brooms on Amavasya.
Both Amavasya and Purnima are ideal for ‘Pitra and Dev’ work. The scriptures advise you to refrain from buying and consuming alcohol during this period. Since Amavasya is related to Shani Dev, it is said that consumption of any kind of alcohol brings negative energy, which can remain active for a long time.
Like alcohol, buying and consuming meat during Amavasya is considered inauspicious. It is said that tasting any kind of non-veg dish during Amavasya has a negative effect on your horoscope. According to Lal Kitab, eating non-vegetarian food on this day increases Shani Dosha.
During this period, food items made from wheat grains and flour should also be avoided. You should avoid buying wheat especially during the Amavasya of ‘Bhadra month’. It is said that if you consume wheat purchased on this day, it goes straight to your ancestors, which is considered inauspicious.
Applying oil on the head should also be avoided during Amavasya. Similarly, applying oil on Sankranti is not considered auspicious. Donating oil instead can prove beneficial for you. It is associated with Saturn and helps in removing ‘Shani Dosh’ from your horoscope. Since Amavasya is considered a day of reverence for ‘Pitra’, any kind of ornamentation should be avoided. If you want to maintain a positive flow of energy, you should avoid your oil massage on this day.
The time of Amavasya is ideal for performing ancestral rituals. Therefore it is advised that you avoid purchasing puja related items on this day. Be it incense sticks, flowers, puja thali or even clothes of idols, you should avoid buying anything of this nature.
