Phalguna Amavasya Vrat Katha
Once upon a time, Maharishi Durvasa was very angry with Indra dev and all the Gods, so he put a curse on them. The curse given by the Rishi weakened all the Gods and put them in a state of danger. As soon as the demons got to know about this, they took advantage of the situation and defeated the Gods. When this happened, all the Gods, led by Indradev, went to Lord Shri Hari Vishnu and told him all about the curse and their defeat. After listening to the Gods, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu suggested the Gods make a peace with the Demons and convince them to churn the ocean together in an attempt to obtain the nectar of immortality which they could share between themselves. The Gods did exactly what Lord Vishnu had told them and begin to churn the ocean with the demons.
As soon as the nectar of immortality was found, Indradev’s son, Jayant snatched the Kalash that contained the nectar and flew away. After which the demons followed him and thus began the war between the Gods and the Demons for the Nectar of immortality. The war lasted for twelve days, during the course of which a few drops from the nectar fell onto Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. As the war was in play, the Sun, Moon, Guru, and Shani protected the Kalash. However, in order to stop the war, Lord Vishnu had to take the avatar of Mohini, the beautiful woman who was supposed to divide the nectar of immortality between the Gods and the Demons. But when the time came, Mohini deceived the demons and gave all the nectar to the Gods. Hence, it is considered absolutely auspicious to take a bath in the holy rivers on the day of the Phalguni Amavasya.
