Ganesh Visarjan is performed to symbolise the form and life of Lord Ganesha. He was born out of clay, and the Ganesh idols are also made out of clay. Devotees immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha in the water bodies on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. Visarjan is performed so that Lord Ganesha can go back to his home.

Step by Step Guide to Ganesh Visarjan Puja

The Puja Vidhi is a way to bid farewell to the most beloved god of the devotees, Lord Ganesha. People do Lord Ganesha Puja for Ganesh Visarjan by following these steps:

  1. The Puja starts with Lord Ganesha’s Aarti in the early morning with the entire family and relatives present.
  2. Devotees use Modak, a home-cooked sweet for the Prasad and offer flowers to Lord Ganesha.
  3. Later on, after the Aarti, people march towards the Visarjan venue and pick up Lord Ganesha’s idol.
  4. Make sure that while taking up the idol, first move it towards yourself. It signifies that the Visarjan time has come and Bappa has to mark the end of the 10-day festival.
  5. Pray to Lord Ganesha and express gratitude towards him as he stayed at your home and solved all your worries and problems.
  6. Take some Akshat (rice without oil) and offer it to Lord Ganesha. Also, put some Dahi on his hands for Good luck.
  7. While Lord Ganesha departs on the day of Visarjan, people tie a red cloth along with coconut, jaggery and grains in it. This is the meal that’ll satisfy Lord Ganesha’s hunger during the long trip back home.
  8. Water is sprinkled on the person who performs the Puja Vidhi for Ganapati Visarjan.
  9. Give a final tour of your home to Lord Ganesha before going on the day of Visarjan. It means his grace and blessing are always there with you.
  10. Recite mantras and Ganpati Bappa Morya to add more energy.
  11. Go out of your house with Lord Ganesha’s idol and ask another person to hold a coconut, then offer it to the Ganpati Bappa and break it in one go.
  12. Later, immerse the Coconut with Bappa.
  13. Do Ganesh Aarti for one last time at the Visarjan venue.
  14. Remove the decoration from Lord Ganesha’s idol and dispose of it properly and do Ganesh Visarjan in the water body.
