Gauri Vrat is an important fasting period, dedicated to Goddess Parvati. This Gauri Vrat is mainly celebrated in Gujarat. Gauri Puja fast is mainly observed by unmarried girls in the desire of a good husband. Gauri Vrat is observed for 5 days in the month of Ashadha. It starts from Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha and ends after five days on the full moon day, Guru Purnima. Gauri Vrat is also known as Morakat Vrat.

Importance of Gauri Vrat
In this fast, unmarried girls or women, after eating fruits and worshiping Lord Shiva for five days, stay awake all night on the last day of the fast and wake up early in the morning and complete the fast by donating food items to the house of a Brahmin or Sadhu. According to Hindu religion, we get the rituals of observing various types of fasts right from childhood. The first fast of Jaya Parvati was observed by Mother Parvati to get Shivaji as her husband. Women and girls observe the fasts observed by Mother Parvati. The fast observed by girls from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Ashadh Shukla Purnima is called Gauri Vrat or Gorio, while this fast observed by fortunate women and old women is called Jaya Parvati Vrat.
By observing this fast the husband’s health improves. Health of children increases. This fast continues for five days from Ashadh Sood Teras to Ashadh Sood Beej. On this day, girls and women wake up early, take bath, go to the Shilalaya and worship Shiva and Parvati. During these five days, women eat Bina Namak along with dry fruits or milk. According to the scriptures, this fast has to be observed for 30 years. According to folk tales, one has to wake up to complete the fast. The fasting person should fast for the Brahmin couple after the fast is over. If possible, dress the couple. Also donate Kanku and Kajal for the integrity of good luck. The house where girls and women observe this fast is filled with happiness. On the last day of this fast, virgin girls and women stay awake.

Story of this fast
Once upon a time, a Brahmin named Vaman lived in a city named Kaudinya. His wife’s name was Satya. There was no damage to his house, but he was very sad because his children were not there. One day Naradji came to him. He served Naradji and sought solution to his problem. Then Naradji said that under the Bili tree in the southern part of the forest, Lord Shankar is seated in the form of Linga along with Mother Parvati. By worshiping him your wishes will definitely be fulfilled.
Then the Brahmin couple found the Shivalinga and worshiped it with full rituals. In this way the sequence of worship continued and five years passed. One day when he was picking flowers for the Brahmin puja, he was bitten by a snake and fell in the forest. When the Brahmin did not return, his wife set out to search for him. Seeing her husband unconscious, she started mourning and remembering Parvati.
Hearing the pitiful cry of the Brahmin, Mother Parvati reached there and poured nectar into the Brahmin’s mouth, due to which the Brahmin woke up. Then the Brahmin couple worshiped Mother Parvati. Mother Parvati asked him to seek blessings. Then both of them demanded a child. Then Mother Parvati asked him to observe the fast of Jaya Parvati. The Brahmin couple performed this ritual and as a result they gave birth to a son, Ratna.

How is Gauri Vrat celebrated?
Seven types of grains are sown during Gauri Vrat.
This fast in which seeds of seven different types of grains are sown at home, these sown seeds are kept safe for four days. After waking up on the fourth day, it is thrown into a river, stepwell or lake on the fifth day. On these days, the person fasting worships Lord Shankar and Mother Parvati every morning and eats only things without salt.
Rules of Gauri Vrat
To observe this fast for a period of 5 days, it is very important to follow some important rules. During this fast –
Wheat or anything made from wheat should not be consumed.
Spices, common salt and some vegetables like tomatoes should also not be consumed during the 5 day period.
Five day festival
- First day- Wheat seeds are planted in an earthen pot, which is decorated with vermilion, ‘Nagla’ (a necklace-like garland made of cotton) is worn. Devotees worship this vessel for 5 days.
- Second to fourth day- Women go to Shivalaya and worship Shiva Parvati.
- Fifth day- Women stay awake the whole night and perform Jaya Parvati Jagran (performing hymns, bhajans, aarti).
- On the sixth day, a pitcher filled with wheat is floated in any reservoir or holy river.
