Goddess Chandraghanta Story: Significance of Third Form of Maa Durga

Maa Durga prayed and impressed Lord Shiva to marry her. So, Lord Shiva agreed to marry and enter the procession in the most terrorizing form. The whole body of Lord Shiva was smeared with ashes. Also, there were many snakes around his neck, and there were matted locks (Jatta) in his unkempt hair.

Due to this terrorizing look of Lord Shiva and the strange procession with the presence of ghosts, sages, and ascetics, the family of Maa Parvati was shocked and almost fainted. To avoid all embarrassments, Maa Paravati also took the form of Mata Chandraghanta – a terrorizing form of Goddess Parvati.

In this terrorizing form, Mata Chandraghanta appeased Lord Shiva to take the form of a handsome Prince. So, Lord Shiva turned into a charming prince with royal clothes and adorned with many jewels. The marriage was solemnized with all Vedic rituals and Puja Vidhi. Also, every year, their marriage is celebrated as Maha Shivratri across the nation.
