Adhik Maas is starting on 18th July 2023 and will end on 16th August 2023. But do you know why and when Adhik Maas takes place once every three years, know about it….
What is more mass
In general, the Indian calendar is based on the lunar month. Out of these, the month in which there is no solstice of the Sun, that month is called Adhik Maas means leap year. This time more month is falling in Sawan and this is the reason that this time Shravan is falling for 2 months. While there are 365 days and 6 hours in a solar year, there are 354 days and 9 hours in a lunar month. In this time the earth completes one round of the sun. Thus there are 11 days less in the Hindu calendar. By adding these days, Adhik Maas comes every three years. Scholars probably composed it to establish harmony between the solar month and the lunar month. In this way, we can say that in every third year, one more month comes.
Importance of Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas
According to Hinduism, every living being in the world is made up of five elements (water, fire, sky, air and earth). Adhikamas is the time in which a person tries to establish the balance of these Panchamahabhootas present in his body through meditation, meditation, yoga etc. along with religious works. That’s why a person is filled with new energy after achieving ultimate purity every three years through the works done during Adhik Maas.

Lunar year has more months
Adhik Maas is also known as Mal Maas for Purushottam Maas. It starts from the Pratipada date. Now if you ask why Adhikamas comes then there is only one answer and that is that it comes to establish the balance between Sun and Moon month. Generally, the lunar year is shorter or shorter than the solar year. Hence, there is a difference of days between the two. However, to eliminate the difference between the solar year and the lunar year, an additional month comes every three years. More months are included in the lunar year. Therefore, during a particular year, the lunar calendar has 13 months instead of 12.
Mythology related to Adhik Maas
According to the legend associated with Adhik Maas, once the demon King Hiranyakashyap pleased Lord Brahma by doing severe penance and asked him for the boon of immortality, but it is forbidden to give the boon of immortality, so Brahma asked him to ask for some other boon. Then Hiranyakashyap asked Brahma ji to give such a boon that no man, woman, animal, deity or asura in the world could kill him and he would not die even in all the 12 months of the year. He should die neither during the day nor at night. He was neither killed by any weapon nor by any other weapon. He should be killed neither in the house nor outside the house. Brahma ji gave him such a boon, but as soon as he got this boon, Hiranyakashyap started considering himself immortal and equal to God. Then Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha avatar (half man and half lion) in the month of Adhikamas and sent Hiranyakashyap to death by tearing his chest under the Dehri in the evening with his nails.
